BEHIND US
What began with meeting their best friend in elementary school — a boy with autism — became the spark for something far greater. As children, Maya and Lara Hammoud saw up close how overwhelming and isolating the world could be for someone whose brain worked differently. They watched their friend struggle to feel safe in environments never designed with him in mind. In first grade, they made him a promise: to build a world where kids like him wouldn’t have to change who they are to belong.
In 2020, that promise became The Perception Foundation — a nonprofit committed to creating inclusive, sensory-friendly spaces where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.
What started with building sensory rooms has grown into a movement. Today, The Perception Foundation develops low-cost, high-impact sensory spaces, runs educational workshops, hosts sensory-friendly community events, and advocates for inclusive policy — especially in underserved communities. Their goal remains the same: to ensure that all individuals, regardless of ability or background, have the tools, spaces, and support they need to thrive.
We are dedicated to empowering neurodiverse individuals to learn, flourish, and embrace their unique abilities. Our commitment extends to all people, regardless of race, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, or neurodiversity. As symbolized by our duck-rabbit logo—which can be seen in two ways—we believe there is no single way to perceive the world or each other. Our mission is to build a new normal that accepts and celebrates all perspectives of daily life.
