Museums are spaces of discovery, creativity, and learning—but for many individuals with sensory sensitivities, neurodevelopmental differences, or trauma histories, they can also be overwhelming. Loud echoes, crowded galleries, and bright lighting can make the experience stressful, limiting access to culture and education.
At The Perception Foundation, we believe museums should be welcoming to everyone. That’s why we are proud to announce the launch of our museum sensory room at the Michigan Science Center—a calm, supportive space where visitors can take a break, regulate, and return to exhibits feeling comfortable and included.
Sensory rooms in museums serve multiple purposes: they provide direct support for those who need a calm space, increase accessibility so more people can enjoy the exhibits, and promote understanding by modeling inclusion and sensory-friendly practices.
By expanding sensory rooms into museums, starting with the Michigan Science Center, we’re making art, science, and discovery accessible—and enjoyable—for every visitor.
